Unclaimed Money - Is It Yours?

People have bank accounts that they do not even know exist.

A relative dies and all the information about accounts is not written down. The family members do not even realize there is money there. The government owes refunds to hundreds of thousands of people. In a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina people are killed or have gone missing. These people have relatives or heirs who do not have a clue about their finances. Some of these people, who were displaced, do not even remember they had a small account. This has been happening for years and some of these small accounts bear interest and become sizable accounts.

There are ways to find out if you have money sitting somewhere that is rightfully yours and you could claim it if you only knew about it. Maybe some distant relative had stock accounts that are now worth a lot of money. Maybe there are valuables sitting in a safe deposit box somewhere which when opened have no one to claim them. Most people do not keep good records. I have multiple small bank and stock accounts and I have recorded all of them and left them with accountants and lawyers sand insurance agents. I have to review this every year to make sure I am not keeping a record of some account for my heirs.

I f you have any reason to believe that some relative left money somewhere it is very easy to search for unclaimed money. Military records and ancestry sites can help. Start your search with the internet if you believe there is a chance you fit into this category. Just go to these sites and type in the surname of deceased relatives and you may be surprised what you find.
